Linux Firewall, Ipcop / Smoothwall

I want to set up a firewall on my home network. I'm trying to decide between Smoothwall and IPCop. Does anyone have any recomendations?

I have some experience with Smoothwall and reccomend it without hesitation.

It does the job, runs nice and lean, easy to use. You dont have to be a Linux guru

to work it .

I'm not familiar with either of these. However, I'm using IPF/IPFirewall. In the beginning, everything on it seems Greek, but I've got a 36 page user-guide on how to use it. It's extremely flexible, allows very granular permissions, and breaks NICs into groups with their own rules allowing different permissions and settings per NIC as well as saves on performance.



The firewall system has - 2000 break-in attempts of all forms, and so far no-one has gotten through. I'm aware of the fact that it's only time till someone does, but the IPFirewall is extremely secure, in my opinion.



This is just as an option, if you haven't considered this one yet. Let me know, I'll happily pass the user-guide on.

I recommend using Kaspersky antihacker. It is a very good firewall.

I've used IPcop before and find it etxtremely good.

1. "I have modified the ipchains2dshield script and added a perl mail routine to IPCOP (will probably work with Smoothwall) linux firewall
2. In my experience, it is the ideal web filter for use with Smoothwall and IpCop since it is lightweight and easy to set up
3. I can't speak to the difference between IPCop and Smoothwall, but the difference between those two and monowall is enormous
