I notice that I can get my company branding name and url running on adword with very little clicks. Is this a good way of branding the company and setting the daily rate of $5 or less.

For a local market with little to no competition, the branding may make sense. Anything else, and I doubt you'll see little impact on your business short term or long term. Just be ready to watch your minimum click cost slowly rise if you are getting little to no clicks.

The only thing I worry is about local competitor caughting onto the idea and clicks on my ads

In that case you should perhaps consider "Site targeting" certain sites and making use of CPM advertising. I've never used Adwords, but I'm figuring that that might be more affordable and the better option for branding.
