    The biggest potential problem due to HL2 leak.

    People have been worried about cheats - A problem, sure, but not the biggest

    People have been worried about other companies stealing ythe code - VERY unlikely. They're not going to take something that can easily be descovered like that

    People have been worried about it hurting sales for valve - This is the big problem, though people don't realize the extent of it.

    The leaker has released alot of the source code. He's released the source files for the current maps. He's released all of the binary files. What happens if he releases all of the source code?

    We could have a potentialy large problem.

    We know that he released a patch...

    Operating on the basis that he will release the source code, we can assume that someone is going to start editing it, and such. We can assume others are going to look at the map sources and learn how to map using them.

    We then assume they meet each other somehow.

    What do we see now? People developing new versions of the game, fixing it, making it better, adding.

    Next we see them start releasing patches adding things. We see people installing them.

    What do we have now? A underground Half Life 2 game.

    Underground, they're only limited by not getting caught. They don't have to worry about others approving their updates. They only answer to what they and their fans want.

    Assume someone buys HL2 on down the road, and get tired fo it, and thei rsuggestions don't get implemented. They hear from a friend about this underground movement, they go there, and end up having a few of their suggestions added.

    Now we have a consumer playing UHL2.

    This continues, and spirals.

    Eventually, everyone is playing UHL2. That means Valve gets no sales, and they die.
    ~~~~~~~~~~
    How do we solve this? I'm not quite sure.
    Thinking on it, I thought about Open-Sourcing Source. Valve could release it under some sort of GPLish license, making it free to use for non-commercial use. If used commercially, they get a percentage of the royalties. Something along those lines. I highly doubt they will take this course of action.
    Very unlikely that they'll be able to stop this sort of thing from happening. They take down one underground developer, anotehr comes in and takes his place.
    that's not true.
    i haven't heard that all of hl2 data files were stolen too..so everything below is based on that..
    i doubt anybody would be able to build complete hl2 game on what's released.
    cheating could be a problem..since cheaters will have source to look at.
    if source code and server code was leaked, valid cdkey generators could be an issue, which will really hurt HL2 retail sales.
    "source" code theft shouldn't effect retail sales since Avg Joe won't be able to do anything with it.
    obviously any developer will be extremely stupid to use that stolen code in their game instead of offically buying it.
    i doubt any developer will even use parts of that source. however Valve lost any innovative edge they might have.
    other developers won't use that code, but they will get an idea of how some things are done...i think that will improve gaming in general.
    i can garantee you that valve will not release source code as open source. if you want to develop for HL2 for free, make mods.
    and i highly doubt that UHL2 will have any momentum since once again, if you want to work w/ HL2 w/o hound-dogs going after you, just make HL2 mod. you will get offical support, and won't have rest of the world going after you
    10. If the problem is due to local triggers engaging two competing behaviors, a similar time buffer can be used to reduce oscillation between the two choices
    I have, on my computer, the necassarry files, expect for the rest of the source, to make a complete UHL2.
    I personally am not going to do such a thing - I've been a huge fan of Valve since they were around, and have had the pleasure of meeting Newell and others in real life.
    THe HL2 "Beta" has most of the models and textures, along with the files needed to make maps, import models, etc.
    The Map Source Leaks have the necasarry info to learn how to make HL2 maps
    The Patch leak shows that patching is quite simple
    If the full source code is leaked, then there's the code files needed to create new things.
    This anonymous leaker was very thurough, I very highly doubt he left anything out.
    You definately can create a full game based on what's here.
    The average Joe wouldn't need the source.
    Modding is not the same.
    Hound dogs have never been a big concernt o the warez community, otherwise it wouldn't grow so rapidly.
    You really missed my point completely.
    To be honest i know quite a few people who will now be buying HL 2 because it runs on their computers, which they didnt think it would. Got a buddy with a geforce 2 and he says it runs alot better than expected.
