8hda3+ FFh status code after inserting new video card.

Archived from groups: alt.comp.periphs.mainboard.epox (More info?)

I’ve been using an epox 8hda3 motherboard with an agp 4x graphics

card, and everything has been working fine.

I recently decided to get a newer agp 8x card (the geforce 6600).

I inserted the new card, hooked it up to the power supply, and my

system won’t start. I have no BIOS, no video, no nothing. the status

code on the motherboard is FF.

When I put my old video card back in, everything

works great. Is it possible that my new video card is defective? or

am I missing something? clearing the CMOS didn’t help at all.

Don't give up on the card. My Geforce FX5200 8x AGP card wouldn't work

in my 8KTA3 AGP slot which is rated at 4x AGP. I took the card and

plugged it into another computer with a true 8x AGP slot and it worked

    great.

I'm think these newer cards don't like falling back to 4x mode in older

    mobo's.

but (correct me if I’m wrong) isn’t the epox 8hda3 agp 8x compliant?

the datasheet seems to suggest that it is. Anything else that it

    might be?

I won’t exactly give up on the card though... thanks for the advice!

I have a 8hda3 with the exact same problem, I built the computer a

little while ago and didnt have money for the graphics card I wanted

at the time. I finally bought a radeon 850xt and it will not boot with

this card. When I put my old 9700pro back in it boots every time.

I have pretty much tried everything, clearing cmos, taking battery out

for a couple minutes. I even took the mb completely out of the case

and made sure when the card was seated that it wasn’t hanging up on

any hard to see parts. I actually can get it to boot to the cmos once

in a while if I barely raise the corner of the card closest to the

lever that holds it into the slot.(I know thats asking for trouble so

    I quit trying that method)

The new 850 card works just fine in other systems and the 8hda3

computer works just fine with my old 9700 vid card. It really pisses

me off because the epox board has much better features than the ecs

and I would like to have my best parts inside of it.

the FFh code the motherboard displays can mean an add on card is not

inserted properly but this definitely isn’t the case. Well maybe it

is since I have had it post with the 850 card by raising one side ever

so slightly. But when I bench tested everything out of a case it

definitely was in straight and it got the FF. Pop the 9700 back in and

    it works.

I measured the thickness, the depth of the contacts and just about

everything I could compare between the two video cards and they are

just about identical, one difference is the 9700 has two cut outs on

the contact area (I am guessing about an inch apart) while the 850

only has one about two inches from the edge.

I am hoping maybe updating the motherboard bios might fix the problem

but so far I haven’t had much luck locating anything newer than what I

    already have.

Anyway sorry for the rambling but as you already know its a really

frustrating problem. By the time someone answers mine will either be

working or resting comfortably at the bottom of my swimming pool but

hopefully this thread will help the next person pulling their hair out

    that finds it using google.

oh and yes the mb is compliant with AGP3.0 4 or 8x 1.5v
